More than 42 million Americans are caught in the middle of America’s healthcare crisis. Unless you’re fortunate enough to have an employer sponsored group health care plan, the majority of working Americans simply can’t afford to insure and protect their families anymore.

Health Insurance Premiums
With health insurance premiums for a family averaging at $800 or more per month, many people decide to go bare, instead of getting some protection and save money at the same time. Medical discount plans are becoming very popular for people who can’t afford traditional health insurance, or who are not eligible due to a medical condition.

Discount plans are not insurance, but by adding a supplemental insurance plan, such as a hospital, critical illness, cancer or accident plan, the consumer can increase the coverage and still make it very affordable.

Under contracts with preferred provider networks, (PPO’s), consumers get an average of 40% discount on healthcare services, such as prescriptions, doctor visits, hospitalization, dental and vision. For an average of $45-90 per month, the members get access to the same negotiated medical rates that usually only the big insurance companies get.

True Story!
According to an article in Sun-Sentinel on May the 12th, 2003, a man in Weston, (FL), who just underwent appendectomy surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, received a 91% discount for his three days hospital stay using a medical discount plan!

The hospital bill was reduced, or “re-priced” from $18,570 to $1,700!

Health Insurance Tips
Before making a medical discount plan purchase, I suggest you ask yourself the following questions, or consider the following facts:

1. What type of company am I dealing with? Is it nationally known? How many members have the plan? How many years have they been in business? Ask your agent for literature about the company, websites, and/or newspaper articles about the company.

2. What are the benefits?

3. What is the monthly cost of the plan?

4. Can I cancel the plan at any time? Is there a trial period, where I can get money back   guaranteed?

6. How exactly does the plan work? How do I get the most out of the benefits?

7. What is the strength of the PPO network? Do my providers accept the plan?
Ask for the website to look up the providers in your area.

8. Ask your agent to see some actual “re-priced or discounted” medical bills for proof of     savings.

People need to seek alternatives due to the increasing health insurance premiums. Consumers need to be flexible, and keep an open mind to new alternative healthcare plans. Don’t reject any offer because it’s not “traditional insurance” with co-pays.
Don’t let the word medical savings plan, or discount plan, scare you, as long as you’ve done your homework.

While these discount plans are not for everybody, and should not be considered as a replacement to a regular health insurance plan, it’s better to have “some” coverage than “none” at all! Keep in mind, the discount plan can actually prevent many medical bankruptcies and save lives.

Suitable for:

  • People who can’t afford traditional health insurance.
  • Individuals with medical conditions who don’t qualify for health insurance.
